Container Initiative

In 2024, Ports of Indiana launched “The Indiana Container Initiative” designed to establish container facilities at its ports. The Burns Harbor port has received approval from U.S. Customs and Border Protection to establish an international sea cargo container terminal, which will be constructed in 2025, with ocean shipments expected to start in 2026. In addition, new intermodal facilities are being developed at its two Ohio River ports in Jeffersonville and Mount Vernon that will connect to five Class I railroads, with construction beginning in 2025. Ports of Indiana is currently seeking partners and customers to engage in planning scalable facilities to meet market demand.

As a key step towards advancing the container initiative, Ports of Indiana signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Port of Antwerp-Bruges on July 17, 2024. The landmark agreement formalizes planned collaboration to advance economic development, container shipping, decarbonization, port security and technology integration. Read about the agreement here.
