INDIANAPOLIS – A record crowd at the Indiana Logistics Summit got an inside scoop about the new intermodal rail service from thriving West Coast ports to Indiana that could be the start of something big for Indiana. While this service is starting small, officials at the summit announced plans to bring together central Indiana shippers to determine if enough intermodal volume exists here to establish a dedicated train that could lower costs and shipping times significantly. A new partnership between the CSX and Union Pacific railroads has opened a route from Los Angeles and Oakland, Calif., to the CSX intermodal facility in Avon, Ind. CSX announced the five-day-a-week service on Sept. 15 and the first West Coast containers arrived Sept. 29. Shippers can get more information about the service at www.indianalogistics.com/intermodal.
